Finding the Right Caterer

When your reception is being held in a venue that allows you to provide a caterer of your choice, you will find that you have a huge range of options to choose from. First of all you need to determine what style of catering you want (buffet, sit down meal or canapés). Then you should start interviewing caterers until you find the one you feel confident about. You are looking for someone who can create the right menu and quality for a price that is right.

Good caterers are reserved months in advance, so you'll need to start interviewing early and must be prepared to leave a deposit in order to reserve your particular date and time.

You might want to consider asking the following questions:

• What type of food items or type of service can they recommend for your budget and the number of guests?
• Discuss menu selections, ask the cost per person.
• Can they handle any special dietary needs?
• Can you sample their food?
• What deposit do they need to hold the date?
• What is the payment policy?
• What is their refund or cancellation policy?
• Will they personally handle and attend your reception?
• Do they provide linen? Is there an additional fee? Is there a colour selection?
• Do they supply glasses, plates and silverware? Is there an additional charge?
• Can they provide the wedding cake?
• Is there a cake cutting fee?
• Will they pack the top tier of the wedding cake?
• Can they provide the alcohol?
• Is there a corkage fee per bottle if you provide your own wine and champagne?
• Can the seating arrangements be planned ahead of time?
• When is the last date you can give them a final guest count?
• How much time will they need to set up?
• What sort of facilities will they require?
• Do they handle clean up and return rentals?
