Marrying in the Church of England
Marrying in the Church of England
If you are planning to marry in an Anglican church, the venue of the marriage must normally be in the parish where at least one of you resides, although there are ways around this, as discussed in Types of Licence .
The minister will ask if you have both been baptized and confirmed. It is unlikely that you will be refused a church wedding if you have not, but the minister will probably want to spend more time with you if you are not church-goers. Ministers are under a duty to ensure that couples are prepared for marriage, and so they will want to be assured that you understand the nature of the preparations you are making and their long-term implications.
You will also be asked if you have been married before. The Anglican Church is still unwilling to allow second marriages in church, although it does allow its ministers much more discretion nowadays. However, if a full church wedding is not possible, the minister may be happy to perform a Ceremony of Blessing after the civil ceremony.
