What the groom and his attendants choose to wear depends on the style of wedding. Morning suits are the most popular choice for a formal event, whereas lounge suits are quite acceptable for a more informal occasion.

It is usual for the groom, ushers, best man and the two fathers to wear the same colours and style, except, perhaps, for the cravat and waistcoat, where differences can lend a touch of originality to an otherwise uniform look.

Most men will choose to hire their outfit for the day, and there are a vast number of companies that offer this service. To hire a complete outfit of trousers, tailcoat, cravat, shoes and hat will cost from about £70, depending on quality.

The groom, his attendants and the two fathers should try to arrange to hire their suits from the same outfitters. Different shops stock the work of different tailors, and the shades, colours and styles vary from place to place. Fittings should be arranged, and reservations made, approximately three months before the wedding.

Alternatives

Members of the armed forces are permitted to wear uniform for their weddings. This can look spectacular, and make for wonderful photographs. It also has a distinct advantage in that it involves little, or no, extra expense!

If the groom is Scottish, he may wish to wear full ceremonial dress in his clan tartan. These can also be hired for the day, although, generally, hire companies supply only the most common tartans. Clan tartans can also be bought ready made or to order.
