The Wedding Gift List

Wedding gifts are the traditional way to make sure you're suitably equipped for married life. If you're setting up a completely new home, the list will almost certainly be a long one, containing expensive items as well as the relatively inexpensive. The wedding gift list should be as comprehensive as possible so that guests have plenty of choice. Even expensive items should be included since it gives the opportunity for people to club together for a gift really worth giving.

If you want to draw up a traditional list, probably the best way to do it is through a department store. This will involve spending a day examining everything the store has to offer and making a list of your choices. In many stores, you may be given a hand held scanner to zap in the barcode of anything that takes your fancy - one way of keeping the groom amused through a seven hour shopping trip! You'll need to set up an appointment with their wedding service advisor to compile your list - but be warned, late nights and weekends will be busy, so you'll probably have to book well in advance.

It's a good idea to draw up a list of items before you start shopping. Without a firm plan, it's very easy to end up aimlessly wondering around the store collecting things that you just happen to see, and then realise after your wedding that you don't actually have any plates or glasses! Make sure you think ahead - although you may not be interested in a fancy cutlery set now, it just might be what you need in a few years time. After all, these gifts (just like marriage itself) should last a lifetime, so take your time choosing the things you'd really like.

Already Have Everything You Want?

Asking for money may not have been the 'done thing' even 5 years ago, but you'll find today's wedding guests are now more than happy to shower the bride and groom with cash. A more subtle approach is to suggest that guests buy gift vouchers for your chosen store. Vouchers are actually often a popular choice for those guests who can't decide what to get you or whose budget doesn't quite match any of the items you've chosen.

Another thought - how about opting for some gifts you can enjoy together? Fancy the sound of a llama trek for two, a trip in a hot air balloon, dance lessons or a year's supply of fresh flowers? You can be as daring or as sensible as you want to be.

If you don't choose a store to manage your gift list, ask a close friend or family member to help you out and manage the list for you. But don't do it yourself, as it may make the guests feel uncomfortable or awkward discussing with you what they're going to buy you.
